LoRa APRS 433 Outdoor iGate
Updated October 2, 2025 — validated against schematic
The RF.Guru LoRa APRS 433 Outdoor iGate is a purpose-built front-end chain designed for reliable APRS reception on 433 MHz, even in harsh RF environments. It is optimized to be mounted close to antennas and can coexist near strong repeater transmitters, thanks to its narrowband filtering, staged attenuation, and robust ESD protection.
Specs at a Glance
- Operating frequency: 433 MHz LoRa APRS
- Front-end chain: TVS → SAW filter → Low-noise amplifier (PGA-103+) → SAW filter → attenuators
- Proximity tolerance: tested <2 m from 50 W VHF/UHF repeaters
- Filtering: B39431B3710U410 SAW filters with steep out-of-band rejection
- Noise figure: ~1 dB after filtering and LNA
- Supply: 5 V regulated, onboard decoupling
RF Front-End Design
The schematic integrates several defensive and performance stages:
- TVS Diode (PESD5V0R1BSFYL) — provides static and surge protection at the antenna input without degrading sensitivity (<0.26 pF capacitance).
- First SAW Filter — Rohde & Schwarz B39431B3710U410 ensures a very narrow ~300 kHz bandwidth around 433 MHz, rejecting strong out-of-band signals.
- LNA Stage — a PGA-103+ wideband low-noise amplifier delivers ~20 dB gain with excellent OIP3, preserving weak APRS packets.
- Second SAW Filter — cleans up amplifier IMD products and reinforces narrowband selectivity.
- Attenuators (KAT-5+) — placed before and after the filters to absorb repeater energy and control gain, keeping the chain linear near high RF fields.
- Filtering Network — multi-cap decoupling and low-DCR inductors keep the LNA stable and quiet.
Coexistence with Repeaters
One of the unique features is its immunity to overload. Mounted as close as 2 m to a 50 W repeater antenna, the combination of:
- TVS absorption
- Steep SAW rejection
- Staged attenuation (≈5 dB each)
ensures that repeater bursts are absorbed or filtered without desensitizing the LoRa receiver. This is critical for outdoor iGate deployments on shared masts.
Mini-FAQ
- Can I mount it near a repeater antenna? — Yes, tested down to 2 m from 50 W repeaters.
- What protects against lightning? — The low-capacitance TVS clamps surges; use a proper outdoor ground for full lightning safety.
- Why two SAW filters? — The first blocks out-of-band signals, the second cleans up LNA distortion and tightens selectivity.
- Why are attenuators included? — They tame repeater energy, keep the LNA linear, and absorb reflected bursts.
