The 10 kW CCS Dual-Core High-Power 1:1 Antenna Tuner Current Balun is a heavy-duty balanced interface for tuner-fed open-wire or ladder-line antennas. It provides perfect current symmetry, prevents RF feedback, and maintains high CM isolation even under severe mismatch. Using two stacked 4″ ferrite toroids and Teflon bifilar twin-lead windings, it delivers amplifier-grade performance with minimal loss.

Balanced High-Power Interface

This version uses four M6 INOX terminals (two for tuner output, two for balanced line). Each bolt is isolated with Teflon spacers for maximum HV creepage distance. Perfect for open-post tuner outputs, link-coupled tuners, and balanced Pi-network systems.

Why Bifilar Windings Matter

Using Teflon twin-lead (not coax) provides:

  • Excellent differential-mode balance
  • High-voltage standoff (Teflon sleeving 24 kV/mm)
  • Low inter-winding capacitance during mismatch
  • Predictable ZCM even under severe SWR

Even though the winding is not coaxial, the balun produces a real, measurable common-mode impedance |ZCM|. The performance numbers below are real CMR measurements using EMC-standard current injection, not differential VNA sweeps.

Specifications

  • Ferrite cores: 2 × 4″ (10.2 cm) toroids (dual-core stack)
  • Winding: 11 turns Teflon twin lead, 24 kV/mm sleeving
  • Terminals: 4 × M6 INOX with Teflon insulation
  • Enclosure: HV-coated polycarbonate (IP64), silicone seal, pressure valve
  • Power rating: 3 kW ICAS / 1.2 kW CCS (single), 10 kW CCS in series
  • Frequency: 1.5–30 MHz (usable up to 54 MHz)

Measured Performance (Single Unit)

Measured with EMC-standard CM injection and calibrated sensing.

Band Choking Impedance (Ω) Impedance-Equivalent dB (from |Zc|)
160 m 12.0 kΩ 53.6 dB
80 m 16.0 kΩ 56.1 dB
40 m 6.0 kΩ 47.6 dB
30 m 2.0 kΩ 38.1 dB
20 m 1.6 kΩ 36.1 dB
17 m 1.4 kΩ 35.0 dB
15 m 1.2 kΩ 33.6 dB
12 m 1.0 kΩ 32.0 dB
10 m 0.8 kΩ 30.1 dB
*Impedance-Equivalent (dB) values are computed directly from measured |ZCM| using a 50 Ω common-mode reference. These values represent the balun’s intrinsic suppression capability — real ladder-line systems rarely present 50 Ω in common-mode. More info: Why dB Attenuation Specs on Ham Chokes Are a Mess.*

Two units in series do not stack dB values — but they double ZCM and give ≈ +6 dB improvement while dramatically increasing thermal and magnetic headroom.

Maximum ICAS/CCS Power Ratings

For true 10 kW CCS operation: use two units in series with ≈2 m of open-wire spacing. This is for thermal/magnetic sharing, not dB stacking (40 m is borderline).

Technical Validation — How We Measure It
All RF.Guru baluns are tested using EMC-standard dual-probe CM measurement. One probe injects calibrated CM current; another measures residual CM current.

This yields true Common-Mode Rejection (CMR) — actual current reduction — not differential-mode impedance artefacts from VNA S21 sweeps.

VNAs excite the coax in differential mode, which does not measure CM behavior. Our EMC method quantifies real CM suppression under load, matching tuner-fed antenna operation.

Mini-FAQ

  • Q: Can I connect it directly to my tuner?
    — Yes. Two posts for tuner output, two for the ladder-line.
  • Q: Does bifilar winding matter?
    — Absolutely. It provides HV tolerance, low capacitance, and true symmetry.
  • Q: Does using two units double the dB?
    — No. It adds ≈ +6 dB and greatly increases thermal/magnetic overhead.
  • Q: Outdoor safe?
    — Yes. Fully sealed and HV-coated.
  • Q: Real power rating?
    — 3 kW ICAS / 1.2 kW CCS (single). Two in series allow 10 kW CCS on 160–40 m.
