Why Raspberry Pi 5 Benefits from 5 A
Raspberry Pi 5 can boot from a suitable 5 V / 3 A supply, but it then limits the total current available to downstream USB peripherals to 600 mA. When the official 5 A supply is detected, the higher USB current limit is enabled automatically, allowing up to 1.6 A for connected USB devices.
This provides useful headroom for equipment such as USB SSDs, hard drives, SDR receivers, and other higher-current peripherals. The power budget is shared with the fan header, so the total connected load still matters.
